Castillo Perelada was purchased in 1923 by Miguel Mateu, a former mayor of Barcelona, near the town of Perelada in northeastern Spain. It turned out that the castle had a long history of producing wine: ancient wine cellars beneath the structure were found, where the Carmelites had been producing wine since the Middle AgesMiguel’s greatest ambition was to bring back this age-old custom.

Three generations later, Castillo Perelada is now recognized as one of Empordà’s most significant wine estates. Greek settlers established the region’s first vines in the sixth century BC, giving the DO Empordà, in addition to Perelada, a long history of wine production.
